The conversion of a former gospel hall into a new children’s nursery and multi-purpose hall for community use. In addition to the extension works, the existing building needed some attention to repair issues in the building fabric, improve wheelchair and accessible access, and replace the outdated heating system. The facility primarily provides a nursery during the day and after-school clubs in late afternoon, but flexibility has been included for other evening classes and community group lets. Flexibility was key to the success of this project, and the design solution comprised a series of different sized and adaptable spaces that can be configured for different group sizes, functions, and ages. A bold coloured cladding panel aesthetic was chosen to accentuate the building and create a focus for passing traffic. Bright primary colours reinforce the use as a building intended for children, and this colour palette was continued into the interior finishes tying the whole building together.
